I was trying to find a hard-shell suitcase that could fit in the overhead storage space on most planes. I like Samsonite because of the 10-year warranty and the reputation for durability. This suitcase fits the bill, but I have three concerns:

    (1) This suitcase is definitely heavier than a comparably-sized soft bag. However, this isn’t really the fault of Samsonite, it just comes with the territory of hard-shell vs. soft-shell materials.

    (2) This suitcase looks great, but I am betting the semi-glossy finish will be trashed as soon as it’s checked through and the gorilla baggage handlers get a hold of it. I wanted a hard-shell suitcase because I don’t want my contents crushed. However, soft bags are flexible and are less likely to be scratched.

    (3) There is a significant amount of space lost inside the bag in order to create room for the collapsible handle. I would estimate that 0.5 to 1 cubic feet of space are wasted creating two large channels for the collapsible handle. Samsonite would have been smarter to just include an external strap that could be used to drag/pull the bag.
