I am traveling through Italy by train (public transportation) to Milan, Venice, Florence, and Rome. What type of luggage do you suggest, a hiking backpack or a rolling suitcase?

I travelled around Europe with a back pack that also has wheels. I bought it in the US – brand called Pangaeia – it was excellent. Had a long retractable handle to pull along. It had a zip section which when you opened it had straps and a waist belt to turn into a backpack. It also had a ziip off front section that you could use as a day pack. There are not cheap however.
They are available from REI online

Use a medium-size rolling suitcase with wheels that don’t squeak. Also take a >> good << “day-pack” size back-pack and use it as a carry-on.
Use the rolling. So much easier!
